Traditional Korean Taekwon-do

Kim’s Taekwon-Do schools teach the Korean martial art of physical and mental fitness, as well as self-defense. Translated from Korean, “TAE” means foot, “KWON” fist and “DO” means way.

Taekwon-Do is the technique of unarmed combat for self-defense involving the application of punches, ground and flying kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions with the hands, arms, and feet. Taekwon-Do is a good fitness program incorporating cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, muscular endurance and muscular strength. Kim’s Taekwon-Do is taught in the traditional non-contact fashion, so children and adults, men and women can all free-spar together. Kim’s Taekwon-Do is recommended for all members of the family; men, women and children.

Hyungs

The “art” of Taekwon-Do is most evident in it’s forms, or “Hyungs.” A Hyung is a set sequence of movements of attacks and defenses in a logical order against imaginary opponents. Hyungs help to develop balance, speed, focus, timing, endurance, and power.

Board Breaking

The purpose of breaking boards is to demonstrate the effectiveness of all Taekwon-Do techniques. Any hand, foot or combination of hand and foot breaking techniques must represent a creative, effective attack with perfect focus, power, speed and accuracy. We use plastic, reusable boards to practice board-breaking. Each board approximates the thickness of a human rib bone.

Non-Contact Free Sparring

Sparring, or fighting, conducted between students without prearranged moves, is known as free-sparring.In free-sparring both students are free to attack and defend with all available means and methods. The attacker must stop the striking point just before hitting the vital spot on his opponent. Control is greatly emphasized. Taekwon-Do is ideally suited for the whole family.
